Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan

Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan is unusual in more ways than having an unnaturally long manga title. I have read a variety of dark horror mangas. Most combine the horror with tinges of other genres. The best being when they throw in a bit of dark humor. Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan throws all other elements besides horror out the window. When it says it's a horror manga, it means this manga exists to horrify you.

Yotsuya Sensei - Lookin' a bit on the demonic side

I love beautiful manga work. Bride of the Water God, Yuuko from XXXholic, Undertaker of Kuroshitsuji all hold a beauty I love to capture in watercolor. Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan was not created for beauty. In all honesty, the main character looks more demon than human.

Yotsuya Sensei may have the look of a demon but he is actually a legendary middle school student who 'haunts' the school roof top. Students whisper of his abilities. Bring him a good horror story, pique his interest, and you will gain his help in solving your mystery. 








When Nakashima Makoto's best friend, Hinano, disappears she finds herself growing frantic with worry. Several young girls have been murdered recently and Hinano could be one of them. In desperation, Nakashima takes a chance on finding out if the rumors regarding Yotsuya Sensei are true.

Damn Horrifying

Gaining Yotsuya Sensei's help comes with a price. Nakashima must become the one who starts rumors of tales of horrors. Hidden in the fabrications are terrifying truths which Yotsuya Sensei uses his unique abilities to uncover. Don't expect the typical murder tales. Murderers don't just kill. They murder for the perfect limb and remove it to rebuild a 'doll.'  Their corpses are left searching for the stolen limb while the nightmarish creation takes on life of its own. Pretty damn creepy and the perfect storyline to set the tone for this manga.

Dissection of My Own: 
 
I was a bit disappointed in the answer to Hinano's disappearance being found so early but the manga does produce more tales of horror for Yotsuya Sensei to enjoy. There is a definite edge of the terrifying supernatural. Further proof messing with the unknown is never a good idea. Even without the supernatural sense the manga does hold the feeling of a true horror movie. Though I sometimes felt like I was seeing snatches of plots from other places (Jeepers Creepers..Where'd you get those peepers...does that ring a bell? Kinda like taking someone's legs for your own...).

There is not a lot of major character development but I think this can be attributed to the manga's short length of 18 chapters. This could also explain why at times I felt like the storyline was getting either dragged out unnecessarily long on one single arc or being hurried when more details could have really made this reader happy. 

Furudate Haruichi is the manga artist behind Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan. This was his first published work which endears me to understanding it a bit better. He seems to have left the horror genre behind now being known for the manga/anime Haikyu!! Interesting change considering it's a sports genre with comedy-drama. Very very different than the dark horror world of Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei No Kaidan.

Because of it's short length and unusual look I do recommend checking out Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei no Kaidan. With the addition of: if you don't mind horrifying scenarios, gore, and a feeling a bit disturbed after reading. Although this does take place around school life, it's definitely not Ouran High School Host Club. So give Kiben Gakuha Yotsuya Sensei no Kaidan a try.
